To some, this suggestion is counterintuitive. When you work in innovation, you will occasionally encounter proponents of what we call the feel-good fallacy. At its most extreme, this fallacy dictates that innovation must at all times be a fun, positive, and generally life-affirming experience; fun and games feature prominently, whereas criticism and confrontation are seen as creativity killers. It is especially popular in companies that see innovation as something that should energize people, implicitly, because people’s regular work fails to do so.

The temptation to avoid negative emotions is superficially attractive, but ultimately wrongheaded. The reality is that innovation can be personally rewarding in many ways, but a daylong feel-good joyride it is not. Quite the contrary, every successful innovation project we have been involved in has featured not just fun, but also criticism, confrontation, frustration, and occasional verbal fights. Those aspects of the process are not pleasant, and you can work on ameliorating them, but it is a big mistake to avoid them entirely. The important thing is to find ways of allowing criticism into the process, not as a stopping point, but as one of several tools that can help improve the ideas.
